Description IDE and KATALYST carried out a rural market development analysis of the Pond Fishery subsector to determine the major constraints besetting the subsector. In interviews with more than 70 pond fishery and related SEs, they identified constraints and then used criteria ¿ potential impact, number of beneficiaries, seasonality, and appropriateness for IDE and KATALYST, length of intervention, and sustainability ¿ to identify two service markets within the subsector: 1) provision of good quality brood fish available in the market and 2) provision of good quality, desired size and types of fingerlings available in the market.
The team developed tools for assessing demand (farmers, hatcheries) and supply (nurseries, traders, suppliers) for better quality and desired size and type of fingerlings and brood fish. To better understand the constraints facing users and suppliers, the team used qualitative data-capture questions with a sample of thirty-nine service providers and seventeen users. Data analysis revealed constraints and possible interventions which the team then validated in focus group discussions.
Methods for info gathering SE interviews, provider interviews, focus group discussions, validation workshops, qualitative
Summary of results For fingerlings, the team identified six possible areas for intervention: · Establish a permanent market place; · Identify and promote alternative feeds for the fingerlings; · Develop improved fingerling carriers for different sized fingerlings; · Create links between quality spawn suppliers and nursery owners; · Determine demand for larger/ desired size and type of fingerlings; and · Improve access to information on proper fingerling cultivation methods. For brood fish, they identified four areas: · Establish brood bank; · Provide training on brood fish cultivation methods; · Create a spawn/ breeding awareness campaign; and · Links cultivators to both experts and financial institutions.
