Description
During the market assessment, MEDA and its partner, ECDI, focused on services available to homebound women microentrepreneurs in three subsectors: handicrafts, garments, and IT. They also became aware of a fourth ¿ embroidered garments ¿ that crossed over handicrafts and garments. Though having high potential, there was a gap in services and the value chain did not function well - producers did not understand consumer demand and consumers could not access the producers.

MEDA-ECDI identified women sales agents who could work directly with the women and provide embedded services - product design, quality control, & input supply and found urban garment makers who could use the embroidered materials to make contemporary outfits. MEDA-ECDI organized marketing workshops for providers and producers to discuss issues and provide market access information.

Subsector assessment, workshops

Summary of results
The resulting program is designed to create competitive, sustainable markets that support development of a high-value productive chain based on the outputs of poor rural women normally isolated from business contacts. The program will allow women to participate directly in mainstream markets and become economically empowered while helping to replace monopolistic buying patterns with fair competition. Additionally, value chain participants will understand the final goods and services markets and the demands of affluent consumers.
