Project Design

Learning by Visiting as a Means of Building Technological Capability, by Avi Caplan, 2005

    Description
Enterprises must learn in order to survive and grow. The success of organizations, says Etienne Wenger, 'depends on their ability to design themselves as social learning systems' (Wenger 2000, 226). New experience is necessary to take an organization, and the community surrounding it, forward. A visit provides a powerful means of facilitating just such an encounter.

This Paper reviews the literature on Visits as a form of learning - including several documents elsewhere on this website. It was researched for the class 'Competing in the Global Economy' at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, while the author was an MSc student at SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research). There are relatively few papers on this promising topic.
