Description
This page includes a wide range of links and documents relating to Making Service Markets Work for the Poor - in health, education and many other service markets. All of the entries propose a pragmatic response to the question: how can public funds best be used, given that the private sector is already providing a wide range of services to poor people?

A study of many such markets in Uganda can be downloaded by clicking here, or from the link below. A link to the programme that generated that study (BSMDP) is also included below.

To see recent research by DFID/ADB in Vietnam, visit www.markets4poor.org. The report of a recent 'Public Private Day' is included below; it includes an abridged version of "MMW4P: Insights from International Cases" by Jim Tanburn for ComMark. A recent publication by ComMark, on MMW4P in South Africa, is also posted below.

For a new (2008) report on "The Business of Health in Africa: Partnering with the Private Sector to Improve People's Lives", visit www.ifc.org/HealthinAfrica. Posted below is the EC's BizClim e-Zine issue on Investing in the Health Sector in Africa - looking particularly at Cote d'Ivoire. For more material on encouraging commercial provision of health services to the poor, visit www.psp-one.com.

For some very interesting research on provision by the private sector of primary education in Africa and Asia, read the winning essay in the last IFC/FT Essay Competition. Note that the IFC is apparently building on this to roll out greater support to private-sector education in Africa.

For insights into what the private sector is already doing in water and sanitation, visit www.wsp.org.

Also below is CARE Canada's policy document, entitled MMW4P.

One recent addition is the link to UNDP's Growing Inclusive Markets report on Creating Value for All, released in July 2008. Additional case studies etc. will be posted on the Growing Inclusive Markets website.

Another recent addition is the DfID site on "Resources, Information, Exchange to build sustainable markets that work for the poor". Currently, it seems mainly intended to build links between DfID-funded programmes to make markets work for the poor.
