- Description
The "Making Markets Work Better for the Poor" project in Viet Nam analyzed the tea value chain in selected areas of Vietnam to determine how to boost the participation of and benefits to poor people involved. Tea plays an important role in income improvement and employment generation in rural areas of Viet Nam, specially in the northern uplands (Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho); north east south (Lam Dong province); and north central coast (Nghe An province). Tea has a strong potential to contribute to poverty reduction because it is planted mainly on small farms in poor areas, is heavily grown by ethnic minorities, requires few inputs, and is labor-intensive. The two main tea producing regions are the country's poorest. And because tea is one of the few crops suitable for cultivation in these regions, its promotion has strong social implications.
The reports below describe the findings of the research and provide recommendations for actions at various levels to improve the participation of the poor in the tea value chain. The "briefing" report is a 9 page summary of the full report (38 pages).
