Country(ies)Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland
Funding agency(ies)Department for International Development (DFID)
Date completedJanuary 2009

Description
FinMark Trust was established in March 2002 with initial funding of £5 million from DFID. FinMark Trust is an independent trust whose business is controlled by six trustees from countries in Southern Africa. Its mission is: "Making Financial Markets Work for the Poor". In pursuit of this objective, the Trust promotes and supports institutional and organisational development which will increase access to financial services by the un- and under-banked of Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia.)

FinMark trust has two main complementary strategies of engagement towards meeting this objective:

Supporting the removal of obstacles to ensure improved functioning financial markets, this typically involves working with policy makers and regulators to address legislative obstacles;
Promoting pro-poor innovation in the financial sector: this typically involves supporting organisations which seek to develop new products or processes; including the production of credible information highlighting market opportunities.
